For a Halloween birthday. She was torn between getting the witch cake she wanted and having a beautiful (traditional) cake. I found this stained glass pattern and kept the colours traditional but made them softer. I carved this out of two sheet cakes: the top half is white cake, and the bottom half is chocolate.

This cake was for a 9 year-old's birthday. He's covered in fondant with gum paste ears. The mud is buttercream frosting. A big thank you to my husband for the design idea and the carving.

This was for a baby shower. The cake is hand-painted fondant. The cherries are fondant with gum paste stems.

I had no idea on how to do the ice cream. I happened to Tivo a Food Network Challenge that featured food stylists and one of their challenges was to make a banana split. It turns out that fake ice cream is just a modified stiff frosting. I love how it turned out!

This cake was for a first birthday party. I love the non-traditional choices of this client. The cake is buttercream with royal icing morning glories and butterflies. I hand painted the butterflies.

This cake is a white cake with lemon filling and 7 minute frosting. I did royal icing carnations in 3 shades of pink. I don't think I've done carnations since my cake class 15 years ago. I love their look!

Coconut Cake

Sometimes the cake orders are less fancy, but just as delicious! This coconut cake was white cake with lemon filling. I had never known that coconut cakes used 7 minute frosting until Perry's co-worker asked for it- I had just known it as that really yummy frosting! I'm super excited to know it now! Guess I'll have to hide the scale...

Getting Married to a Green Bay Fan

The largest oval I could find wasn't big enough to get the 100 servings they were asking for, so I asked if I could supplement it with a smaller cake- something I think of when I think Green Bay and Wisconsin:

It all started with a cutting board. This is a cardboard cake circle covered with fondant, then painted with food colouring.

Then I added the "cheese". White cake with buttercream filling covered with fondant. I used food colouring to give it more depth.

Guaranteed to make a Packers fan happy!

Surprise Birthday Cake

My good friend had a birthday recently, and her mother called up and asked if I would do a surprise cake for her. Since I was a few days away from a wedding cake delivery (plus packing to leave on a week-long cruise to the Bahamas), I agreed to do it, but only because it was for Jodi and she deserved more than a supermarket cake.

Jodi is as crazy as I am when it comes to being involved in activities. She is a CPR and First Aid instructor for the Red Cross, diehard Auburn fan, and Girl Scout volunteer (she's a trainer, co-leader with me, co-Service Unit Director with me, Service Unit cookie manager, plus helps out with her older daughter's troop).

She also has the coolest Hello Kitty pink bike you will ever see.

Rose and Stephanotis Wedding Cake

This was my first wedding cake in a loooong time. I can't tell you how nervous I was. I fretted about everything- I redid the roses 3 times. The cake is yellow cake with whipped ganache filling, covered with buttercream. I also did gum paste for the first time- I figured I'd start out easy with the white stephanotis:

Which was good because I made 27 dozen of them!

My client brought in a napkin for me that matched the baby shower decorations. She told my husband that she had gone to a supermarket bakery, but they turned her down. I was so glad I could do this cake for her!

Joshua wanted a Bumblebee Transformer cake for his birthday this year (6). We scaled down to a 10" round cake instead of my usual sheet cakes for this one (I did this on Black Friday and discovered I only had round cake boards and I was NOT going out to Wal-mart!), so I couldn't do a good version of Bumblebee as the robot or car. I finally found this Autobot logo and compromised by doing the cake in Bumblebee colours.

I did a Thanksgiving cake this year for Perry's work potluck. I've been wanting to do this cake for a while, and I modified it from the 3D chocolate cornucopia with marzipan veggies on top to just a frosting one.

I was looking for a picture of Mr. Lunt without his hat, but trust me- throw a gold tooth on my little guy here and you've got him.

Imagination to Reality

October's theme in Cub Scouts was Adventures in Books. We had a really fun pack meeting, with our Cubmaster coming up with a fantastic mystery over missing awards. I volunteered to do the cake, since I had a book pan. I had no idea at the start of the month what I was going to do, but that's what Perry is for.
I finally had an idea of scenes from books, but I had no clue what to use. Perry gave me some ideas of what captured boys' interests and I went to work. I asked Mischa what page number to put on the book, and she suggested our pack number.

Perry then came home, saw the cake, and said it would be cool to have put a smooth brown border around the bottom of the cake (instead of the white shells here) to make it look like a book cover. I scraped off the stars and followed his suggestion. It turned out really cute.
My favourite part of this cake was the rough sketch. I haven't ever drawn a rough idea for my cakes before, and I don't think I've picked up a pencil to draw in 10 years (and I used to love to draw in high school). I changed some things around, mainly not liking the title look, moving the pirate flag/map down so I didn't have 2 black scenes next to each other, and I decided to ditch the Gryffindor crest for the golden snitch (I figured boys would like the sports in Harry Potter, and it was also a good reason to buy the gold dusting powder I've been wanting). I used silver dusting powder on the spaceship and the wings of the snitch and dragon.

Our girls have a triple birthday party every year- their birthdays are a week apart, and they have a cousin about an hour away whose birthday is 2 days before Liesie's (actually 363 days after). Since we all go to my dad's for the party, we need the 3 cakes. The hard part is trying to co-ordinate all of the cakes and still keep them small enough that 3 isn't too much cake. This theme was pastels- yellow, pink, and purple. Mischa and Liesie had a separate party with a friend's family, and since I was caked out, I made cupcakes instead and topped them with the leftover roses.

This volcano cake was fun, even if it was a beast to put together. I did this for a Cub Scout Blue and Gold, as well as Caleb's end of year party. This one has the volcano covered in fondant, which was easier than covering it with buttercream. The inside holds a juice glass that I put dry ice in and added water for the smoke.

This little guy was fun, although keeping the pretzel stick upright wasn't. Liesie "helped" me with this cake by tasting the frosting on the side. I had used all of my blue, and anyone who does cakes will tell you that matching frosting is a beast. I came up with a wave effect made up of a royal blue, white, and sky blue mixed gently together. It turned out better than the straight blue I had before. I used the same technique for the lava on the volcano. Thanks Liesie!

This was supposed to be Yoda- last minute idea + no picture to go off of doesn't equal the most recognizable image.

This originally started out as an Ewok (see above Yoda comment). When Joshua saw this, he said, "Chewbacca!", so my new story is that it was always Chewie.

Caleb's 9th birthday cake- yes, it was pointed out to me that the Stormtroopers' guns did not shoot multiple laser beams like this.
