This was for a birthday party that had a magician:

Witchingly Bootiful!

For a Halloween birthday. She was torn between getting the witch cake she wanted and having a beautiful (traditional) cake. I found this stained glass pattern and kept the colours traditional but made them softer. I carved this out of two sheet cakes: the top half is white cake, and the bottom half is chocolate.

Bakugan and Ben 10

We had a triple birthday for my nephew and sons this year:

Surprise Birthday Cake

My good friend had a birthday recently, and her mother called up and asked if I would do a surprise cake for her. Since I was a few days away from a wedding cake delivery (plus packing to leave on a week-long cruise to the Bahamas), I agreed to do it, but only because it was for Jodi and she deserved more than a supermarket cake.

Jodi is as crazy as I am when it comes to being involved in activities. She is a CPR and First Aid instructor for the Red Cross, diehard Auburn fan, and Girl Scout volunteer (she's a trainer, co-leader with me, co-Service Unit Director with me, Service Unit cookie manager, plus helps out with her older daughter's troop).

She also has the coolest Hello Kitty pink bike you will ever see.

Mickey Mouse Birthday

This was for a one-year-old's birthday party. This is his smash cake:

And this was for the rest of the guests:

Bridging 2009

This is one of the cakes I did for our Girl Scout bridging ceremony this year. I also did the two bridge cakes from last year to go with it.

Ballet Birthday

Liesie is loving ballet right now and chose a ballet cake over Barbie or princesses.

Autobot Birthday

Joshua wanted a Bumblebee Transformer cake for his birthday this year (6). We scaled down to a 10" round cake instead of my usual sheet cakes for this one (I did this on Black Friday and discovered I only had round cake boards and I was NOT going out to Wal-mart!), so I couldn't do a good version of Bumblebee as the robot or car. I finally found this Autobot logo and compromised by doing the cake in Bumblebee colours.
I've been working on creating more detailed borders:

Imagination to Reality

October's theme in Cub Scouts was Adventures in Books. We had a really fun pack meeting, with our Cubmaster coming up with a fantastic mystery over missing awards. I volunteered to do the cake, since I had a book pan. I had no idea at the start of the month what I was going to do, but that's what Perry is for.
I finally had an idea of scenes from books, but I had no clue what to use. Perry gave me some ideas of what captured boys' interests and I went to work. I asked Mischa what page number to put on the book, and she suggested our pack number.

Perry then came home, saw the cake, and said it would be cool to have put a smooth brown border around the bottom of the cake (instead of the white shells here) to make it look like a book cover. I scraped off the stars and followed his suggestion. It turned out really cute.
My favourite part of this cake was the rough sketch. I haven't ever drawn a rough idea for my cakes before, and I don't think I've picked up a pencil to draw in 10 years (and I used to love to draw in high school). I changed some things around, mainly not liking the title look, moving the pirate flag/map down so I didn't have 2 black scenes next to each other, and I decided to ditch the Gryffindor crest for the golden snitch (I figured boys would like the sports in Harry Potter, and it was also a good reason to buy the gold dusting powder I've been wanting). I used silver dusting powder on the spaceship and the wings of the snitch and dragon.

(the black squiggle next to the space scene is what happens when you leave a pen and paper within reach of a certain 3 year old girl in our family)

Caleb 10

For Caleb's 1oth birthday, he wanted the alien Goop from Ben 10. I used piping gel to get the translucent slime feel of the alien.

House of Blues

I used fondant to make the logo for this cake.

Webkinz Birthday

As I mentioned before, I have to do triple cakes for my daughters and their cousin. This year's theme was Webkinz.

Out of This World

It's amazing what a few Crisco and spice jar lids can make! I also handmade the white chocolate candies on the side.

Crossing the Bridge

I did these cakes for our Service Unit's bridging ceremony. I started with the Daisy petals, bridged to the Brownie Try-Its, bridged to the Junior badges, then bridged to the Cadette and older IPs. I really like creating things with royal frosting.

Happy Easter

This was for a class party. I had seen this cake using a shaped pan, but since I didn't have the pan, I used the idea as a template.

Dora the Explorer

This was Mischa's 3rd birthday cake. Another colouring book design.

Welcome Caleb!

Caleb's first cake.

I Choose You, Pikachu!

A birthday cake for a close friend's son. A little nostalgic, since he's almost done with high school. I found a Pokemon book with punch out figures, which I then laminated with clear contact paper to keep the grease from the frosting from soaking through.

Finding Caleb's Birthday

I did this one for Caleb's birthday while we were in New Mexico. Another colouring book design. I think if I did this cake again, I would like to add green fruit rollup "kelp" strands along the sides of the cake.

Howlingly Good

Is howlingly even a word? This was one of my first cakes from my first class. We had to use a stencil. This design is one of my favourites for my jack-o-lanterns, even today.
